Most people shopping for a bed in Delhi NCR start with finish and price. For a rented room or a PG, that is the wrong starting point. The decision that actually matters is single versus double, because that choice decides how much floor you have left for everything else you need to fit into the room.
Measure before you decide anything else
A tenant moving into a single room near a metro station in outer Delhi once measured the room with a phone app only after paying the advance, and found that a double bed left barely enough space to open the cupboard door fully. The mattress itself was fine. The problem was that nobody had checked the gap between the bed and the wall before the bed arrived. That gap is what a single versus double decision is really about.
What a double bed costs you in a small room
A double bed in a room built for one person usually eats the walking space along one side, blocks a cupboard or window from opening fully, and leaves no room for a study table or a second chair. In a typical rented room of around 10 feet by 10 feet, this is the difference between a room that feels usable and one that feels like the bed is the main occupant.
When a double bed is still the right call
None of this means a double bed is wrong for rented rooms in general. Two people sharing a room, a couple renting together, or a slightly larger room where the bed is not the only large item all change the calculation. In those cases a double bed can reduce the total furniture needed rather than add to the clutter, since one bed replaces two.
- Measure the room length and width before ordering anything
- Check the door swing and cupboard clearance, not just wall length
- If you live alone in a room under 100 sq ft, a single bed almost always fits better
- If two people share the room, compare one double bed against two single beds on total space used
Storage matters more than size for renters
For a renter, a bed that includes storage underneath often solves a second problem at the same time: where to keep boxes, seasonal clothes or luggage without adding another piece of furniture to a room that is already tight on space.
